This month, the town is rolling out three new electric buses to replace gas-powered vehicles, a move officials call a major milestone in Tecumseh’s sustainability efforts.

“This is a significant step forward for our community,” said Mayor Gary McNamara.

“By investing in electric transit, we are reducing our environmental footprint while continuing to improve local service for our residents. This initiative demonstrates our commitment to innovation, sustainability, and delivering real results for the people of Tecumseh.”

The new buses cost $1,350,000. Of that, $1,080,000 came from Ottawa’s Rural Transit Solutions Fund. The town covered the rest.

“Investing in cleaner, more efficient public transit systems is key to building strong, sustainable communities,” said Gregor Robertson, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure and Minister responsible for Pacific Economic Development Canada.

“Through the Rural Transit Solutions Fund, we’re helping communities like Tecumseh transition to electric transit — reducing emissions, improving service, and delivering on our climate goals. Congratulations to the Town of Tecumseh on this exciting step forward.”

The new fleet offers the same route coverage and service levels as the existing gas-powered buses. However, the town said, the electric buses will be quieter, will have lower maintenance costs, and won’t have tailpipe emissions.

Using federal funding, the town also installed charging infrastructure to support the electric buses.

In 2024, Tecumseh Transit Service had 18,588 riders.
