Get the pots and pans out, ’cause Thanksgiving is fast approaching! It’s that time of year when we all try to figure out who’s going where and, more importantly, what they’ll bring to eat. I like to try something new every year, like Dolly Parton’s famous family side dishes, so I’m ever vigilant for fresh recipes.
Thanksgiving casseroles are a must for our gatherings, so I figured I’d start there. I came across a green bean casserole recipe with a secret ingredient that I’d never considered, and I’m here to share its glory with all of you.
What is the secret ingredient?
It’s called Trader Joe’s Mushroom & Company Multipurpose Umami Seasoning Blend. This blend features umami, the fifth taste type after sweet, sour, bitter and salty. Umami translates from Japanese to “pleasant savory taste,” and it’s something you’ve most certainly encountered before in mushrooms, cheese and tomatoes.
TikTok creator @freddsters was kind enough to share this recipe with everyone, and it’s exactly what I was looking for this Thanksgiving.
@freddsters The BEST Green Bean Casserole! If you’re asked to bring one thing to dinnee this year, this has to be it! #freddsters #letsmakeit #thanksgiving #sidesgiving #greenbeans #casserole #greenbeancasserole #recipe ♬ original sound – Freddsters
Adding umami to recipes can greatly increase their overall flavor by peppering in undertones of sour and sweet. It’s an all-arounder that complements any recipe, especially a green bean casserole. Don’t be afraid to sprinkle it into other savory dishes like mushroom stuffing or roasted potatoes for an extra punch.
Where do I find it?
This particular seasoning can be found at the beloved purveyor of cheap finds, Trader Joe’s. TJ’s claims that this magical bottle of flavor will make everything taste better, and we’re inclined to believe them. If you don’t have a Trader Joe’s near you, try Target and Amazon for certified dupes.
