Saudi Arabia’s National Water Company (NWC) continues to transform the Madinah region by planting over 2.1 million trees this year, as this massive environmental undertaking directly supports the Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) and reinforces the Kingdom’s commitment to a sustainable future.
The NWC northwest sector leads this ambitious project to expand vegetation cover and combat desertification across the historic region. By utilizing tertiary-treated wastewater from local treatment plants, the company effectively turns a secondary resource into a vital environmental asset. Consequently, this strategy optimizes water resources while simultaneously improving the overall quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
Strategic Growth and Independence
During the 2025 season alone, NWC teams successfully planted more than 472,000 trees to stay ahead of their strategic schedule. Furthermore, the company confirmed that 200,000 of these trees have already reached full maturity and no longer require manual irrigation. These hardy plants now thrive independently, proving that the integration of treated water and local flora creates a self-sustaining ecosystem.
The NWC works in close coordination with the National Center for Vegetation Cover to scale projects during upcoming agricultural seasons. These collaborative efforts aim to reduce harmful emissions and significantly increase oxygen levels within the Kingdom’s diverse urban environments. Moreover, the project supports local biodiversity by creating new habitats for native species and raising the national vegetation rate.
Launched in 2021 by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the SGI drives Saudi Arabia toward a net-zero future by 2060. The NWC plays a pivotal role in this transition by applying the Circular Carbon Economy approach to every water project. Ultimately, these three overarching targets, emissions reduction, afforestation, and land protection, ensure a cleaner and safer environment for future generations.
