The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has thanked President Bola Tinubu for conferring on him the national honour of the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON).
Naija News reported that the Green Chamber within the week rejected the honour of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) conferred on the Speaker, while the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, was conferred GCON.
The House argued that the House is of the same ranking as the Senate. They demanded that the President confer on the Speaker the national honour of GCON.
In his reaction on Saturday, Speaker Abbas stated that the President has corrected mistakes made by other administrations.
“I thank President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for correcting the mistakes by past administration of not according the House its constitutional recognition. The President has once again demonstrated his democratic credentials of being a true democrat, an objective and a listening leader.
“With this development, Nigeria and indeed the world, now know that the House of Representatives of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has the same status as its sister chamber, the Senate, and is treated as such.
“I thank the President for heeding the voices of reasoning from the House and other well-meaning Nigerians.
“I equally congratulate the 10th House of Representatives “for this historic achievement.”
“I thank my colleagues for rising against the age-long discrimination of the House, which we have corrected through this collective efforts,” Abbas wrote on his X handle.
