CBS News is looking to carve out a piece of the burgeoning video podcast market, launching a video extension of its podcast 48 Hours: Post Mortem.
Hosted by Anne-Marie Green, Post Mortem functions as a complement to the crime-focused newsmagazine. Amazon listed it as one of the top podcasts of 2024, and it also cracked Podtrac’s top 10 list.
Now the audio podcast will also have a video option, which will be available on YouTube and on the upcoming 48 Hours FAST channel. Post Mortem is the first video podcast from CBS News, and will be the first original show on the FAST channel.
CBS has leveraged 48 Hours extensively to create new podcast IP, not surprising given the broad interest in the true crime genre. Some of the shows launched last year include Peter Van Sant’s Blood Is Thicker, Erin Moriarty’s Murder in the Orange Grove: The Troubled Case Against Crosley Green, Candyman: The True Story Behind The Bathroom Mirror Murder Podcast and 48 Hours: NCIS, a crossover with the scripted drama.
Video podcasts are booming, thanks in large part to YouTube, which says it now has more than one billion monthly active users watching podcast content on its platform. YouTube’s success has forced Spotify to more aggressively court video podcasts, which can also offer superior monetization options.
