Beach Boys’ concert headlines five things to do this weekend in Regina (March 28-30)

It’s a weekend of live music at the Brandt Centre (Beach Boys and Riley Green) along with theatrical performances (Globe and Curtain Razors) and local markets (MRKT and RFM).

It may not be surfing weather in Regina, but the iconic band is set to perform at the Brandt Centre on Friday night amid the Canadian leg of the Endless Summer Gold tour.

1. Saskatchewan Dreamin’The California-based group, which debuted over 60 years ago, is considered one of the most influential bands in rock history, known for classic summer anthems like Surfin’ U.S.A., California Girls, I Get Around, Fun Fun Fun, Good Vibrations, Kokomo and I Get Around.

The original members were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 while Rolling Stone Magazine ranks them No. 12 on its famed list of the 100 greatest artists of all time.

With legendary frontman Brian Wilson no longer touring, Mike Love has taken over as lead singer and is now the last founding member of the group. He’s to be inducted into the 2025 Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Meanwhile, live music fans can double their fun this weekend as American singer Riley Green brings his Damn Country Music Tour to the Brandt Centre on Sunday night. He’s joined by special guests Ella Langley, Jake Worthington and Erik Dylan.

2. Steel MagnoliasGlobe Theatre presents a classic of film and the stage as Steel Magnolias opens Friday and runs through April 13 at MacCorquodale Place.

The comedic play brings audiences on an “unforgettable journey of friendship, resilience, and Southern charm” by transforming the stage into Truvy’s beauty salon in small-town Louisiana, “where the community comes together in a celebration of sisterhood and strength.”

“Steel Magnolias follows a close-knit group of women as they navigate love, loss, and life’s unexpected twists,” says a news release. “Prairie audiences know the quick wit and community ties that get one through unexpected challenges. Resilience runs deep in Regina and on the prairies and Steel Magnolias celebrates that practicality alongside the enduring power of female friendship.”

Director Estelle Shook leads a cast that includes Maggie Huculak (Ouiser), Jenny Young (M’lynn), Mary-Rose Cohen (Shelby), Maya Baker (Annelle), Marianne Woods (Truvy) and Kris Alvarez (Clairee).

3. Curtain Razors presents …The Regina-based performance company is offering a new play, Tommy and Père, which imagines a private meeting between Athol (Père) Murray (founder of Notre Dame College in Wilcox) and former premier Tommy Douglas during a critical time in Saskatchewan history

“This fictional encounter between these two prairie icons occurs during Saskatchewan’s bitter Doctors Strike in July 1962,” says a news release. “The strike lasted 22 days, resulting in the Saskatchewan Medical Care Insurance Act – the foundation of modern national healthcare. Tommy and Père evokes the seething tension between opposing perspectives during those crucial three weeks in Saskatchewan.”

The show features ex-Regina actors Cavan Cunningham (Corner Gas) as Père and Jayden Pfeifer as Douglas.

“Curtain Razors developed this work for the past two years alongside playwright Arthur Milner,” said artistic producer Johanna Bundon. “The play has become a gathering point for an intergenerational conversation about medicare and the political DNA of Saskatchewan.”

The five-day run concludes with performances on Friday (11 a.m., 7 p.m.), Saturday (2 p.m. and 7 p.m.) and Sunday (2 p.m.) at the Saskatchewan Science Centre.

4. Spring marketMRKT is hosting the spring edition of its local market on Friday (1-9 p.m.) and Saturday (10 a.m.-4 p.m.) at the International Trade Centre.

The venue’s website describes it as a “meticulously curated space where local Prairie brands come together in a vibrant marketplace atmosphere. Enjoy fine food and drinks alongside unique treasures and a distinctive vibe that connects vendors and attendees. MRKT is more than a market; it’s a celebration of community, shopping, and collaboration.”

5. Indoor farmers’ marketThe Regina Farmers’ Market is scheduled to wrap up its winter schedule on Saturday (10 a.m.-2 p.m.) at Banner Hall in REAL District.

The indoor market features a variety of local products and vendors.

RFM moves its events outdoors in summer.
