PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. — The Peachtree City Post Office will soon bear the name of Sergeant First Class Shawn P. McCloskey, a U.S. Army Green Beret who gave his life in service to the nation.
A dedication ceremony will be held Friday, Aug. 29, at 11 a.m. at CAF Airbase Georgia in Peachtree City. Local leaders, postal representatives, and McCloskey’s family and friends will gather to mark the occasion. The public is invited to attend the free event.
Speakers will include U.S. Rep. Brian Jack. (GA-03), Peachtree City Mayor Kim Learnard, City Council Member Clint Holland, and representatives from the U.S. Postal Service.
The renaming became possible after former U.S. Rep. Drew Ferguson introduced H.R. 8919 to designate the post office at 151 Highway 74 South as the “SFC Shawn McCloskey Post Office.” The bill was signed into law on Jan. 4, 2025.
McCloskey, a native of Hudson, N.Y., grew up in Kennesaw and Peachtree City before enlisting in the Army in 2002. He earned the coveted Green Beret in 2004 and served as a Special Forces Engineer Sergeant. On Sept. 16, 2009, at age 33, he was killed when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device during a patrol in Afghanistan. He was serving with Company B, 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne).
The dedication serves as a tribute to McCloskey’s bravery and sacrifice, while honoring the many service members who put their lives on the line in defense of freedom.
