Led by MVP Lebron Jhames Daep, the Perpetual Junior Altas decimate the La Salle Green Hills Greenies in Game 3 of their best-of-three finals to capture the school’s first-ever championship in NCAA basketball history
MANILA, Philippines – Add the Perpetual Help Junior Altas to the list of champions in NCAA juniors basketball history.
For the first time ever, the Junior Altas are the kings of the NCAA juniors basketball tournament after dominating the La Salle Green Hills Greenies, 101-67, in Game 3 of their Season 100 best-of-three finals at the FilOil EcoOil Centre on Tuesday, April 15.
The Lebron Jhames Daep-led Junior Altas made history as their victory marked the school’s first-ever basketball championship in any division since joining the league in 1984.
The graduating Daep — who was named the tournament MVP and the Finals MVP — was one of three Perpetual players to come up with a double-double stat line in the statement win as he recorded 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Jan Roluna led all scorers with 15 points, to go with 10 rebounds, while Icee Callangan tallied 14 markers and 12 assists, along with a whopping +/- of +29 for the Joph Cleopas-mentored Junior Altas.
Jim Corpuz and Dan Rosales also scored in twin digits for Perpetual with 13 and 12 points, respectively, on a combined 5-of-11 three-pointers.
After failing to finish off La Salle in their thrilling Game 2 showdown last Sunday, April 13, the Junior Altas made sure to get the job done early this time as they quickly pulled away from the Greenies in just the opening period.
With the score knotted at 15-all with exactly three minutes to play in the first, Rosales, Callangan, and Corpuz suddenly caught fire from long distance as the trio combined for five treys, ending the quarter on a massive 17-2 run.
Leading by 14 points at the start of the second, 32-18, Perpetual showed no signs of slowing down, extending its lead further to 20 at halftime, 58-38, before pushing it to its largest at 34, 99-65, with only a minute remaining in the lopsided affair.
Defense was the name of the game for Perpetual as it only allowed La Salle to convert on 24 of its 72 field goal attempts (33.3%), a stark contrast to the Junior Altas’ 40-of-81 shooting clip (49.4%).
Perpetual also held La Salle star Gillian Quines to just 18 points after the high-scoring guard erupted for 35 markers in the Greenies’ 95-91 Game 2 win.
Gian Gomez was the only other player to reach double figures in scoring with 17 points on a lowly 6-of-18 shooting for the Greenies, who are coached by La Salle Green Archers legend and former PBA star Renren Ritualo.
