Tamil Nadu government is likely to issue a tender to identify an airport developer for the ₹20,000 crore greenfield Parandur airport about 70 km west of Chennai. This comes in the backdrop of the in-principle approval for the project expected to be issued by the Centre any moment, said sources.

The land acquisition for the project is in full swing. The compensation being given to the landowners is quite substantial and five to six times the market value, sources noted.

Despite the rehabilitation and resettlement package, local villagers continue to protest against the project for the 983rd day on Thursday. They fear their livelihood would be affected due to the project in 13 villages, including Ekanapuram, Nelvoy, Valathur, Ediayarpakkam, Madapuram and Akkammapuram surrounding Parandur. Every day in the evening, villagers take turns to protest, said sources.

The need for the Parandur airport arises because the Chennai airport handles over 2.2 crore people annually. After the ongoing modernisation work, it can handle 3.5 crore people a year for the next seven years. The Ministry of Defence had also granted a No Objection for the grant of site clearance for the Parandur airport.
