Most oppose higher taxes to pay for green energy

More than half of the public are not willing to pay higher taxes to fund a transition to green energy

However, three-quarters of Irish adults support renewable energy projects such as on shore wind and solar energy near their homes.

The figures contained in the KPMG 2025 Powering Tomorrow report also found 78% support large scale infrastructure projects but support for high-voltage power lines is at 36%.

This report has revealed continued public scepticism about Ireland achieving its climate targets.

56% of those surveyed remain concerned about climate change, a decline from 60% in 2023, but less than 6% believe Ireland will reduce emissions by 51% in the current Government target of 2030.

13% of respondents view this target as entirely unattainable.

One-third feel that Ireland should shift to a combination of low-emission fossil fuels and renewable energy sources.

Half are willing to shop more sustainably, such as buying second-hand or reducing consumption.

A similar percentage would adjust their electricity usage to align with renewable energy availability – such as charging electric vehicles at night, delaying dishwasher use, or investing in smart appliances.
