Once activated, the signal turns amber and then red to stop traffic.
Town officials said the pedestrian signals are being installed instead of pedestrian crossovers (POXs) due to the “high volume, speed, and width of Front Road.
“This decision ensures the safety of all road users,” officials said in a news release.
During the construction period, there will be temporary lane closures in both directions at various times of the day and at different locations.
Officials said the contractor, Amico, has been instructed to close lanes in the off-peak directions whenever possible to minimize disruption.
Those peak times include 7 to 10 a.m., when traffic is heaviest headed northbound into Windsor and 3 to 6 p.m., when traffic volumes increase southbound headed towards Amherstburg.
Work begins this week at Bouffard Road, moving southward, and the full project is expected to take approximately four weeks to complete.
